If you enjoy looking glamorous you can imitate the look quite easily.  Once you have a white sundress, blonde hair (or wig) and high heeled shoes you’re almost there.Don’t forget lots of red lipstick; you’ll need that for copying her famous pout. You can either hire a Marilyn Monroe costume from a fancy dress company or you can put something together yourself from scratch. If you’re really serious about looking like Marilyn you can either have your own hair cut and styled, or you can go for the easier option and buy a wig.

Many women like to make the most of their Cleopatra costumes by lounging around on the sofa whilst commanding their slaves to fetch them food and drink. There’s great fun to be had in taking advantage of your costume while your slaves to do all the hard work.

You can achieve the look very easily by dressing in black shirt, pants, and a wide brimmed black hat. Don’t forget to get yourself a sword too; plastic ones can be picked up very cheaply in toy stores.You’ll also need a black eye mask, a swishing cape, and some long black boots to finish off the look.  If you don’t have boots you can buy boot toppers to fit to your black shoes. It’s a good idea have a moustache too, and if you don’t have a natural one you can draw it on with an eyebrow pencil.

If you can get in character, so much the better.  Why not practice clicking your heels on the floor and waving your sword around?

First of all think about the vest you will be wearing.

It should be made from animal print fabric, so you can either use an existing shirt or you can buy some cheap fabric to cut up. If you have an animal print t-shirt already you’re in luck; you won’t need to make many adjustments apart from possibly tearing open the neck to give it a ragged appearance. If you need to make a vest from scratch it is very easy to run a simple tube shape up on your sewing machine and then attach a couple of straps.

You will then need your “fur” which again should be available in many outlets.  You can buy some cheap brown fleece to make into a skirt and matching top. The top can just be some fleece thrown around your shoulders and held together with a pin.

The basic khaki shirt with pants or skirt can either be bought from an army surplus store or from a high street fashion store.Khaki has never gone out of style so finding a matching outfit should not be difficult to achieve. A stainless steel dog tag can also be picked up in the army surplus store or you can find an online supplier. Headgear usually comprises a cap, and again these are easy to obtain.

For footwear you should look for black or khaki socks, and preferably some brown walking boots.  If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on boots you might be able to find some in an online auction site, but if you are really stuck you could just wear some plain walking shoes or even trainers.

No-one is really going to look at your footwear, especially if your army uniform is particularly eye catching.  You don’t need to spend a lot of money to for a fancy dress army girl outfit, you can just mix and match with items you already own.

Look at any picture of an English soccer referee and you’ll see basically the same thing; black shorts, black and white striped t-shirt, white knee length socks, and of course the obligatory whistle worn around the neck.A lot of guys already have some of these basic items in their wardrobe, but if not they can be bought very cheaply in charity or thrift shops. It is also easy to pick up a cheap pair of shorts and a t-shirt in many low cost high street stores. The stainless steel referee whistle can be obtained from a sports shop and should not cost more than a few dollars.  Footwear is simple, just about everybody has a pair of trainers in their wardrobe already. If not, they can be bought cheaply in shoe shops or online.

Referee fancy dress isn’t just for guys though. Quite often you’ll see women dressed as referees too. The basic outfit is the same with shorts, t-shirt and whistle, but some women prefer to augment the look with high heeled shoes rather than trainers.

Whether it’s for a man or a woman, the referee costume is one of the quickest to put together but it’s also one of the most comfortable to wear.[ad#ad-3]

To get an idea of how the characters look you can go online and look at fan sites. Fred Flintstone was known for dressing in spotty orange clothing so you may want to take an old t-shirt in that shade and cut the sleeves to make them look raggedy. Once you have cut the t-shirt you can glue on large circles cut from black fabric to form the spots.

Finally, tie an old piece of light blue fabric around your neck to form the scarf.  Barney dresses in a simple brown tunic which is easy to reproduce from a fabric such as soft fleece.

For Wilma you can adapt a large white t-shirt, making the edges raggedy with a pair of sharp scissors. For her huge beaded necklace you can string together some cheap table tennis balls, which you can pierce with a knitting needle and thread with strong elastic.

Betty wears a two-piece outfit in pale blue fabric, and again it is easy to cut up old clothes for this. To recreate the hairstyles for any of the characters the simple answer is to don a wig.  As far as shoes go; that’s the easiest part because they don’t wear any. And that’s it; you’re all set for a fabulous Flintstones fancy dress party.
