If you are stuck for fancy dress cheap ideas for a party you might want to think about making your own homemade costume. Shop bought or hired costumes can sometimes be very expensive compared to something you can put together yourself, especially if you use items you already have in the home.

Some fancy dress costumes can be put together in minutes and cost practically nothing. How about taking a large grocery box, cutting a large slot for the “post” and painting it red? A child can slip it over his or her head and pretend to be a mailbox. Try to use a lightweight box and cut some eye holes too so the child won’t get frightened.

If your child has an old black tracksuit you could glue some glow in the dark stars all over it and call him “Star Man” or “Superstar”. Or how about dressing him up in a black suit and donning some flippers. With some cleverly applied face paint he could be a penguin. These are all very cheap ideas and well within the capability of most people, given the right equipment.

Older children and adults can easily adapt existing clothes, especially if they are going to a 60s or 70s party. Second hand platform shoes, flares and long scarves can quickly transform somebody into a 70s glam rock fan. If they’re a science fiction lover it won’t take much effort to put on a long coat and stripy scarf to turn them into a 1970s style Dr Who.

A fairy costume is so easy for girls. Just slip on a white dress or even a nightgown, attach some homemade wings made from coat hanger wire and sheer curtain fabric, and they’re ready to fly.  A magic wand can be made by wrapping a garden cane in aluminium foil and attaching a cardboard star to the top.

Other fancy dress cheap ideas include ready made costumes. You don’t have to buy brand new, and it’s well worth looking on some of the online auction sites. Some of the costumes attract very few bidders and you can easily pick up a bargain bunny rabbit or witch’s costume. When you’ve finished with it you can even resell it on the auction site, and that way its cost you practically nothing.
